    Frost and young trees

Now that all my young trees are budding/pushing new growth, what sort of things do I need to look for when a late Spring frost occurs? Should this be a concern? I mean, trees have evolved over millions of years, I wouldn't think a frost from a 36F low would do any trees in, but just wanted to know what the school of thought was on this. My trees look fine after this morning's light frost, but I am still concerned anyway as we might get another frost tomorrow morning.

Should I be taking any measures to protect them? Will they be fine just being left alone?

You should be nearing your last frost date by now. The last frost date in Asheville NC ends on May 15. I am in the BlueRidge Appalachian Mountains.

    RE: Frost and young trees

Frosts are rare even in my area after Memorial day, I'm hoping tomorrow morning will be our last frost of the season. I called the local nursery (where I bought my Swamp White Oaks), they reassured me that any frost should cause no damage to the trees at all. I was just concerned because the leaves on them are small and seem very fragile, easily susceptible to frost. I have been pulling my potted sugar maples into my garage each night to make sure they aren't hit by the frost.

On some trees, the leaves may look wilted briefly but try not to worry about it.

Yeah, we were hit by a frost (AGAIN) this morning, and the leaves on my young 4' tall poplars aren't looking so great, but they definitely don't look dead or anything. The leaves on the Maples don't look great either, but they do seem to bounce back after a few days. I think this morning's frost will be our last, as it is statistically unlikely for us to have another frost at a later date, especially after Memorial Day. Still nerve-wracking though to see the trees not look so perky after a frost.

My swamp white oaks, river birch, and cleveland pears don't seem affected at all by the frosts, though those trees are taller and definitely a few years older. The saplings are most affected, though I covered the Poplars last night in preparation for the frost this morning, although it didn't seem to help that much.
