    arborvitae in Atlanta, GA

I recently purchased and planted 2 emerald green arborvitae and 1 "little gem" arborvitae in a filtered sun area. I live in Marietta which is a northern suburb of Atlanta and I now have some concern whether they can survive the hot summers of Atlanta. From what I've read, they are hardy to zone 7, but is Marietta zone 7 or zone 8?
Any info or advice is greatly appreciated.

Go to the main Arbor Day page to find the hardiness zone look-up feature. You just type in your zip code and it tells you your zone.

    Here is the link:

I entered my zip code in the hardiness zone and the answer was 7-8. Moderator QQ is from the Atlanta area, so maybe he can chime in on how well emerald green and "little gem' arborvitaes do in these parts. From what I've read, they appear to be hardy in northern climates, but I'm wondering how they'll do here. Since they've been planted in a filtered sun area rather than full sun, I'm hoping they'll be able to tolerate the heat. Thanks for the reply.

Arborvitae cultivars do fine here. Very hardy. They grow in Miami.
Sometimes they get eaten- bagworms but that's an easy fix.

The name 'little gem' is usually associated with southern magnolias. Maybe that's what you meant? If so that is a southern coastal species that thrives in heat/humidity.

You probably couldn't kill those guys if you tried. I xplanted an Emerald with a double trunk 6' tall 2 years ago having let the roots totally dry out and through 2 years of drought summers and the thing is thriving. I'm just to your north in Knoxville. Those guys are tough.

Both species are good performers in Cobb County, but the filtered sun may be a moderate problem. You will likely notice a reduced growth rate and a somewhat thinner canopy on both species when not receiving 8-10 hours of full sun per day.
