    Where to plant....

Yay! It's time to plant trees again. Just caught an great sale with excellent stock and lots of choices. Am wondering where in relation to the house to plant Acer saccharum 'Bailsta' or Fall Fiesta Maple. This maple is supposed to grow 50-75' tall and 50' wide and takes full sun. I have a 28' tall ranch home with an underground foundation exiting from the SW corner. How far does the tree need to be from the house? I bought it for shade and have other trees around but have space. Is closer to the house better or further away so that the tree limbs will not touch the house? Does the tree need to be spaced from other deciduous trees so they do not overlap?
Also got a black alder, Alnus glutinosa. The thing is already 15' tall and it likes wet feet. Supposed to get 30-40'T x 30'W. It looks so good I'd like to plant it in a low spot in the front yard, but it would block the view of the house which I really wouldn't mind but that seems to be the style nowadays, no trees in front. I have other low spots on the property, but would not get to see the tree often. It is very stately now, but does anyone know how black alder look later on? I hear they sucker and spread.

    RE: Where to plant....

For your maple I'd say DON'T plant it closer to the house than 15 feet. I love sugar maples. After my experience with some beautiful white ash the previous owners planted 15 feet from the house I'd probably go 20 or 25 feet away myself. I'd feel real bad if a tree I planted dropped a large branch on a baby's bedroom 40 years from now, but sugar maple doesn't get THAT huge of branches like my ash.

If you want anything like the mid day shade i DO benefit from I'm thinking 15 should be safe.

Even a 15 to 20 feet you're likely to have leaves and helicopters in the gutters.....

Eventually you'll have to do some pruning, more the closer it is but virtually none I'd guess on average by 25 feet....

um, in 25 to 50 years yourself or the next owners of the house will have to pay a little attention to how the tree is aging if the home is within its fall line...

Think I read sugar maples don't like salt, if you really spread lots of it on any walkways or sidewalks maybe take that into account.....

I know I typed some negative sounding stuff. Just my thought process. I really do love them trees and wish I had room for some.

    RE: Where to plant....

The deed is done. I ended up planting it more like 30 ft from the house because I have a 5 ft wide mounded bed next to the foundation. It looks great out there but I am not feeling good about the planting. I had to use a mattock to chop through the clay soil and I hear that sugar maples do not tolerate that soil at all. But, that's all I have within reach and will hope for the best. It sure is a pretty tree. I probably won't be around to see it in 40 years, too bad we can't live forever to see how our trees turn out. The Norway Maple I had near that location snapped in the wind this spring because I had not protected the bark in the winter and it got sun scald and the trunk was weak. So, I chose the sugar maple to replace it.
I also had to plant the black alder in clay. Funny thing about that spot, there were many earthworm holes, so it seemed more porous until I hit water, which the alder prefers.

Sometimes people don't realize you don't need to be directly beneath a tree to get shade. They cast shadows.

Yes, yes. I have been watching those shadows cast by other trees in my yard. I kept track of where they were in the hottest part of summer during early to mid afternoon, when we really need shade. It amazes me how much the sun's position changes in just a few weeks.
