    uh? what's this?

found this small tree in swamp, only 2" diameter. looks like a sweetgum ball but less pointed. leaves look nothing like a gum. bark is fairly rough looking for such a small tree. no clue here.

Yeah, I was going to post this too. I have a few growing in my swampy area with the willow oaks and red maples. Everybody keeps asking me what they are, but I don't have an answer for them yet.

Ar the leaves alternate? I can't tell. Your pictures show a fairly large file size but they are showing up small on the screen. IF you post them to a photo album site they may be larger and easier to see what we're looking at.
The bark looks a little like persimmon but I can't really tell.

when i resized pics, it came up to 255 KB but size is smaller after posting? randy, how'd you get your pics to come out so big? i don't believe the leaves are alternate, maybe opposite. i can go get some better pics tonight, and/or try to resize pics.

At last, a really easy one! This is Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis). See link below:

I just took the pics with my trusty old 3.1 megapix camera. Then resized them to 1024x768. Then uploaded them to photobucket and pasted the IMG Code here.

I think the pics were in the 450kb range after I resized them. Anything under 1mb is cool with photobucket. It seems file size and photo size have little to do with each other. I can make a small photo have a bigger file size than a big photo of the same picture.

I was thinking Buttonbush when I was browsing around here: http://www.forestry.auburn.edu/samue...ogy/index.html But the pics weren't good enough, so I couldn't be sure. (Its under Rubiaceae). I was also thinking Ogeechee tupelo because it says "Male flowers are in compact balls."
