RE: What would you plant here?

The birds will eat the cherries before any hit the ground. All mine disappeared overnight!

See my thread here about my sour cherry tree: http://forums.arborday.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3624 You can also see the seeds left on the tree from where I pulled cherries off to eat. The seeds pull right out and stay on the tree. Those cherries will never see the ground! Birds will get them too fast. So, that's why I think its a clean tree.

Apples, on the other hand, just fall off for no good reason. Anytime the wind blows they fall off. Pears too.... They're all a stinky mess!

But, if you're still against a cherry tree, maybe an oak is what you want. (I haven't finished filling in the chart yet and I didn't see that you said no big trees until I already posted this, but I'll leave it just in case ).

I think to get the size and growth rate you're looking for almost certainly means a fruit tree. According to arboday, the dogwood and trident maple grow about the same speed and that is slow. Fruit trees grow fast however.

    Randy,

Those cherries in the pics (in the thread you linked) look delicious! I really, really love the taste of cherries.

Hmmm.........I'll definitely consider a cherry tree then. We have a lot of birds, squirrels, and the occasional rabbit here so hopefully they'll help with the clean up.

What type of cherry trees should I consider? Can you give me some genus names? I need shade and fruit.

Thank you for that great chart. It's very helpful.

RE: What would you plant here?

Well, unfortunately I don't know that much about the different varieties of cherries. I just know the 2 trees I have.

I know Bing cherries taste good! But, I don't know anything about the tree itself.

Here are the links to the 4 cherry trees arborday has:

    http://www.arborday.org/Trees/TreeGu...tail.cfm?ID=91
    http://www.arborday.org/Trees/TreeGu...tail.cfm?ID=97
    http://www.arborday.org/Trees/TreeGu...tail.cfm?ID=95

Maybe there is someone here that has some experience with some of these trees....

One more word in favor of oak: there are small oaks!

I love Black Gum and it isn't that big.

RE: What would you plant here?

They looked like Scarlet Oaks to me and not northern Reds. Those would be fine. Ginko would be a good choice and there are smaller cultivars that don't get as big as Biloba. My personal taste trumps practicality and confomity. I would set out 1 Tulip tree and 2 Eastern Hemlocks and as they grew place a shade perennial garden underneath and soon there would be a quiet forest setting that could be bordered with flowering shrubs. Again I'm trying to create a little patch of Appalatchia.

How about a sourwood? You get flowers, fall color and it's a US native.

I thought about suggesting sourwood too, but thought the name might be a turn-off.

Hey kaenergie, you're not going to leave without telling us what you decided to plant are you?

RE: What would you plant here?

    Absolutely not, Randy.

I'm listening to everything you guys are saying and doing further research on the trees everyone mentioned.

I was in a rush to plant a tree within a month but after talking to a few people, in the best interest of the tree I have postponed the planting date to spring 2009.

I'll definitely let you guys know what I end up going with.

Thanks to one and all once again!

Hurtle, thank you but I don't really like the shape of the sourwood.

    I appreciate your input.
