Speaking of Cedars, I've had probs. I'm in Rocky Mountain region. and tried western red cedars. they died. of course it was a drought. there are some naturally growing cedars in the forest. I think they need the shade of the mature trees around them in the first few years. Does anyone else have any ideas?

WRC is not really a xeric tree. Its found mostly on moist sites, both moist soil and moist air in the pacific northwest. So it may be the wrong tree for a climate that is normally dry. And if you suffered from drought and were not able to water the transplants before established then most trees would have never had a chance.

If you can get some photos of what you are finding in the woods and post them in th tree id section someone should be able to tell you what they are and then you can try planting whatever that is being it is better adapted to your climate.

This thread makes me feel better: I've planted a bunch of eastern red cedars the past two years and every one of them has died.

It is ironic that they're so hard to transplant since they seem to grow like weeds in lots of places in the Midwest.

Do you have an acid soil? Sounds like cedars are picky about their soil.

Maybe plant your cedars where pines are already growing. Or plant some pines first. I have cedars all over the place naturally and they grow well with the pines n oaks.

ERC also have a rather long tap root which can make transplanting difficult.

What's the purpose of a tap root?

To"Querky Quircus", thanks for the information. Next time we are up there will get photos of the cedars. I guess dummy me being in the west, just assumed they were western red cedars.

For the first time ever I ordered Eastern Red Cedar thru the mail. Half of them have died in 2 months! When digging them up I usually get 90% or more survival no matter how I botch it up. Perhaps the stress of being mailed was worse than what I put them thru.

Tap root is nature's way of increasing survival of small trees. Its more important in the first few years of tree's life. It shoots down and both anchors the tree and because it is deeper than lateral roots, has better access to moisture. Typically, after the first few years, the tap root stops growing or slows way down while growth shifts to the lateral roots. If cut when tree is sapling/seedling, the tap root cut heals and new down-ward lateral root start from the tap root. (at least that is what is described for loblolly pine, probably holds true for other species with tap roots).
