    Fast Growing Hybrid willows?

I want to plant some of these and was wondering the best approach? I live in Mid Michigan(fowlerville) and plan to get 200 or so of these trees to use as a wind blocking border for my property. I live in the country and have a heavy clay based soil. Part of my yard gets real wet in the spring and fall while other parts are much higher and tend to dry out in the summer. How early in the spring can I plant and what do you sugest for best practices to get fast growth. Fertilizer, water, etc..

Thank you for any help at all.

By the way, I found these trees in a flyer mailed from Burgess Seed and Plant Co. Any opinion on this outfit? Is this a good place to buy? Should I go elsewhere as I have no loyalty, just want a good deal on a lot of these trees.

    RE: Fast Growing Hybrid willows?

Is there a reason you're committed to the hybrid willows? There are alternatives that might result in better trees in the long run.

I get those catalogs from Burgess, too. They're some kind of stock catalog that different companies use--they just plug their own name and information in and send them out. I bought some indoor citrus trees from them and all but one are still alive. They seem cheaper than a lot of places, but I'm not sure that is always a good thing.

But I'd suggest checking out the Michigan DNR. You should be able to get a better deal than what you'd pay through Burgess. I know that the Michigan DNR quit selling seedlings, but they have a list of nurseries at:

You might also give your soil conservation district office a call and see if they have seedlings available. A quick call to one of the nurseries or the SCD could yield some financial savings, at least. Tell them what you want to do and ask them what they suggest. But they may not sell hybrid willows.

In my opinion, hybrid willows are not a good choice. They are extremely fast growing, but the wood is very weak and they lose lots of leaves, branches, and are easily lost to wind or ice. They do well in wet soil, of course. But you'll have to water those in the dry spots.

Have you thought about an evergreen screen? Thuja Green Giants grow very fast and nicer trees in the long run. That's just one alternative--spruces would work as well.

As for fast growth, I'd suggest checking out Oikos Tree Crops or Musser Forest or Miller Nurseries--all have websites--and buying some of their root dip and some fertilizer tablets. I've had good experiences with both.

They don't seem to sell hybrid willows though.
