    Maple worth moving

We just took out an old hack berry over our drive. I would have loved to have kept it but the berries are just impossible to deal with on our cars. Anyway my father is farming some land for a landlord who wanted 10 trees removed to add to the field. 9 of the 10 were pretty bad shape so no big deal. The tenth is a nice looking 20 ft tall hard maple with a really nice shape. At least I am assuming it is a hard maple as it seems to have been growing quite slow over the last 8 years my father has been farming the land. Well anyway we recieved permission to move it if we wanted it, and I was getting all set to hire a tree spade when my father questioned whether it was worth moving. The problem is there is a decent gash on the tree. I assume it will close up and should all be ok, but my father is worried in the meantime damage will weaken the tree and eventually we could end up with a hollow tree over the driveway. Opinions are welcome.

Myself, I would not pay to move that tree. Not at all. I am not an 'expert', but it would seem that the tree is still not over its 'insult' and its a toss-up as to whether it will ever attain its genetic potential, even withut spading it up.

Spading a tree will remove a LOT of the feeder roots, so the tree will burn energy re-establishing *those* as well as burning energy to continue the healing - and the threshold of failing-to-thrive is close enough already, IMO. I would readily bet a lot of $$$ that a tree, even just 5% of that tree's size, would fairly quickly surpass it in size/health within a decade or two.

    Just my 2 cents,

From the looks of things you have something of a tree deficit. I would consider moving it if the price was right. and also if there were no visible signs of stress and no environmental stresses such as drought etc.

    RE: Maple worth moving

For me, it would depend on how much money you're going to spend. I think Alex is right and you might be better off with a smaller tree that will end up being larger and healthier. There is a risk in moving the maple and you may end up wasting your money. If it were me, with limited resources, I'd buy a smaller, faster-growing (but still long-lived) tree and plant it. I'd probably go with a red oak of some kind or maybe a hybrid oak. In ten years, with the right site and care, it could very well be as large or even larger than the maple. And it would be much less risky at the outset.

But, if I had plenty of money and finances were not a consideration, I'd probably see what would happen with the tree spade! Nothing like "instant" trees . . .
