    RE: Virginia Tree

Yep it called Silk Tree many call it Mimosa (Albizia julibrissin)

It is a weedy invasive tree especially in the southern warmer parts of the U.S. it was brought over to the U.S. in 1745 from Asia as an ornamental but it spread out of control like a weed soon after.
    Go here:

Here is were the Silktree will grow in NY state. They usually will not flower in the cooler summers up in the extreme north range because they require hot summers to flower.

That's a good looking one too. Most of the ones around my area are smaller.
    Trees are individuals too.

Please note that it is on New York's Do-No-Plant list.
Please find one of hundreds of other attractive flowering tree species to use instead.

The mimosa is a beautiful plant. See how many people here have posted pics saying they like it! It's a joy and a great addition everywhere it goes. And my neighborhood has plenty of older trees but I fail to see this 'weed' stuff and even if I did, it's an improvement and isn't hurting anything. The attacks on this tree are weird and disturbing to me. Thank goodness VA isn't a tree nazi state that tells you what you can't plant. I doubt the poor thing would grow in NY anyway, too cold, it's a southern tree.

    RE: Virginia Tree

'trees, you really might want to check out what your state has to say about invasive species: and check out the invasive plant list:

To sum up, VA considers the mimosa "moderately invasive" and advises not to plant invasive species for reasons that we've stated in other posts on the topic.

One of the references the state points to is Virginia Tech's weed list which includes the mimosa:

    RE: Virginia Tree

This is what I mean by 'not a tree nazi state'

"It should be noted the list is not regulatory in nature, and thus does not prohibit the use of the listed plant species."

They only inform you of the opinions of some, but do not force you not to plant it or do anything to you if you do. In fact, there are NO trees forbidden to be planted in VA, and only 2 weeds- and I do mean weeds, not trees some people call weeds. In neighborhoods, the 'invasive' trees are totally not a 'threat' because the leaves and seeds are raked and run over by the lawnmower. I have seen this myself and continue to do every day. And in the spots where some 'invasives' have grown along the roadside, it's usually in places nothing else will survive, and in other cases the 'invasives' coexist side by side with much less attractive or desirable 'native' trees which have no trouble holding their own. I still think unless a tree is spreading disease, this stuff is ridiculous, especially in a country full of 'invasives' from all over the world who have destroyed the enviornment- humans.

I hope no one's love of the beautiful mimosa will be harmed by a small percentage of persecutors. This tree has been here 250 years and has caused NO harm. It's just as good for birds, bees and butterflies as any 'native' tree, it's beautful and smells good. Mimosas make me happy, and not much else does.

I also think it's one of the more ancient surviving trees, given its fernlike quality.
