    My Roses of Sharon ...

My Roses of Sharon arrived a few weeks ago and I planted them right away. I am in zone 8b and as you know we have been having a very mild winter however the established Roses of Sharon in the back yard are not anywhere near looking to leaf out yet.

The little ones you sent me are ALL putting out leaves. What to do? Can I just leave/leaf them or will a cold spell kill them totally? I figure that this type of shrubby tree would send out more buds and shoots even in the spring if these die off. Why the heck did they sprout when the others have not anyway? Was I sent non-dormant ones?

RE: My Roses of Sharon ...

Not sure where you're at, but I'm in eastern PA, and I've had nearly everything planted in the fall wake up thinking it was spring. I've also noticed that plenty of established trees - saucer magnolias and all manner of cherry and dogwood - are also starting to open up their buds.

There's an article in the Boston Globe (boston.com) about Arnold Arboretum having this problem with many trees and shrubs - except, for some reason they can not fathom, forsythia.

RE: My Roses of Sharon ...

Thanks for the article. I think that some plants are a bit more 'intelligent' than others relying on not only temp but hormonal responses to the day/night cycle. Forsythia may be one of them. I am new in far Southern GA (Thomasville) and have never experienced a winter here before being from central NY.

However, it still doesn't explain why the new Roses of Sharon plants are leafing while the established trees are not (all the others are on schedule, dormant, or blooming nicely like the Camellas .... what a treat as I have never had ornamentals that regularly bloom in Jan/Feb!). I guess I'll just leave them and be happy that all of them, even the little teeny weeny scrawny one, are leafing out. Must be the roots are proliferating nicely as so far they are a success and for $10 for 5 I cannot complain.

RE: My Roses of Sharon ...

My theory as to why the newly planted ones - and anyone in the nursery trade, correct me if I'm wrong - might be that the dormancy they go into prior to shippings is refrigeration assisted, and deeper than other plants from the same area.

When they reach their destination, they do fine hanging out and waiting for warmer weather in the Spring, but when too many consecutive days of warmer weather arrive in the Winter, they wake up then - the local plants, however, are still drowsy, and, having been there all along, haven't been pushed into full dormancy yet.

I have nothing to back up this assumption, though.
