I've just come into the house after planting my latest round. (Always exhilerating!) At the last minute, my wife convinced me to put the three Dawn Redwoods I purchased in a different location than I'd originally intended, but now I'm thinking this may have been a bad idea: They are now about 50 feet from the leech field for our septic system. I realized, after planting the trees, that I really don't know how extensive or invasive the roots of Dawn Redwoods can be.
If anyone out there has experience with these, I'd sure appreciate some input! It's early enough that I could just pull out the saplings, including the balls of mud they're now sitting in, and stick them where I'd originally intended with little effort. (We decided on the new location because a new road is being put in near our house and they will serve to block headlights nicely in this spot.)
Not the expert, mine is only a little taller than me, but in the absence of more experienced information I will say the big ones at the MO Botanical Garden don't seem to be upsetting their nearby sidewalk.
Thanks to both of you!
That's good news. Since the drainage field is currently about 25 years old, I suspect I'll have to service it for other reasons before the Dawn Redwoods become relevant.
