    tree hit by car

Hi! I have an old cedar tree in front of my house, it's about 50 -60 feet tall. A car ran off the road doing approx. 55 mph and hit my tree!! The tree is still standing, but it seems to be leaning slightly, and there are several gouges in its trunk now. Does anyone know if a tree can survive after being hit like that? I love the trees that line the front of my home and am terribly upset that I may lose this one. Any help would be appreciated.

The gouge in the trunk is no big deal. The lean is concerning: It may mean destruction of important parts of the root system which could result in the tree falling over. Without more precise info (the sort one could probably only get on site), I don't think much more can be said. Prudence probably dictates contacting a licensed arborist for a consult.

    Good luck!

sorry about your tree...I think laserboy is right, the leaning is more of a concern. Is it a slight lean or a very obvious? Cedars root in between rocks most times so there is not much to hold the roots. Arborist may be the best bet. Any signs of roots showing?

    RE: tree hit by car

Last weekend a teenager crashed into what looks like an oak on the street outside my neighborhood...(can't tell because I just saw the tree tonight and it's dark and no leaves). The driver didn't survive the crash but the tree is still standing and you'd never know a car even hit it if it weren't for all the flowers and stuffed animals and news crews and of course the tire tracks. Sorry to hear your tree didn't fare as well.

    Look at the lean.

It may be new, but you may have not noticed an existing lean before.

If it's just a few degrees, it may be fine.

Don't look at the lower trunk. Look at the upper trunk.

If a tree leaned before, and self-corrected itself with growth, the upper trunk is often more vertical than the lower trunk.

If the upper trunk has the same slight lean, then maybe it did just happen.
