Need info on Shawnee Brave Cypress

My place of business has new landscaping around a new building, and my question has to do with a row of Shawnee Brave cypress trees. The trees were planted in the spring of 2005. The first year they did well and looked healthy. Suddenly, this fall, the needles (within one week) turned almost completely brown. They look really sick! I don't remember any color changes happening last fall, but some around here are saying that since it is happening to the whole row (5 trees) that it must be a seasonal thing. Another thing that you might need to know is that the trunks are pretty much bare of any bark. The guy who tends to our lawn said he was told to watch for a caterpillar that attacks these kind of trees and eats the bark. Another unusual thing about these trees is that within the circle of mulch at the base of each tree, there are roots that have pushed up like arches. Is this normal? Does anybody have any idea what is wrong with our trees?

Gotta run but just wanted to ask if you knew these are deciduous trees.... they lose their leaves in the fall after turning brown or orange sometimes dark red etc.

CAP, the leaves of a ‘Shawnee Brave’ Bald Cypress are deciduous and they also have deep sage green frawns turning orange to brown in the fall.

Bald Cypress trees develop "knees" in saturated soils but they usually don't in normal soils but it might be possible that they developed a few, they are normal to grow these in the wild in heavy swampy and wet areas, they can grow very large "knees" as seen in these pictures:

In drier places they usually don't grow them but they might depending upon the amount of soil moisture such as these small "knees":
These might be like the ones you see maybe?

Is this what your ‘Shawnee Brave’ Bald Cypress bark looks like? If so it's normal:

Thanks Treeman for your response and photos. This makes me feel much better. The trunks of our trees look exactly like the one in the photo...I'm glad to learn that this is normal. As for the knees, ours don't look as ugly as the ones in your photo (thankfully!), but more like the root coming up out of the soil, arching, and then going back into the soil. But maybe the knobby things will appear eventually. The soil has been soggy due to a problem with drainage. We have been in a battle with the landscaper over whether our "swamp" is caused by a leak in the underground sprinkler pipes or poor drainage in that area. The ground has finally dried up, so maybe they have solved that problem and none of those knobby knee things will pop up.

    Thanks for responding!
