Need some help with my trees.. they seem to be dying??

Hello all. I am having some problems. I have a few trees that I planted last year and they all seemed to do fine last year. This spring as they started to bloom I found that a few just did not bloom and appear to be dead. Some just have like 3 or 4 leaves on the whole tree. I will list my problems individually below and hopefully someone can give me some advice on what I can do to bring them back to life.

I have a plum tree that I bought last spring(2005) and it has many limbs on it but only 4 leaves. No new branch growth. Branches are about 6 inches long and the leaves are more toward the top of the tree near the trunk. I put some fertilizer spikes for fruit trees out hoping that would help but nothing.

I have a Bing cherry tree and a Early Rich Cherry tree that I bought last year as a bare root tree. They were both doing great last year but this spring the early cherry did not bloom at all and appears to be dead. The Bing cherry has a few leaves on it but is not really growing and no new branch growth on it.

I have several peach trees ( Hale Haven, Elbertas, ect) all bought last spring as bare root and not many of them actually did well last year but I have 2 that have made it to this year but are not really growing and only have a few leaves on it. I have 2 of these peach trees that instead of growing or anything the leaves are growing at the base of the tree about an inch or 2 up from the ground and those limbs are actually taller than the tree itself. No branches or leaves are growing above this so the crown and the whole tree is bare except for this.

I have a granny smith apple tree that I plante last year that I bought at the store and it was doing good last year, but this year it has a few leaves but does not appear to be growing very well, there is not much branch growth or anything on it. I also put fertilizer stakes around this tree hoping it would help but not noticing anything.

Any help with these problems and an explanation as to why some of my trees are not getting any branches or growth above the bottom of the tree would be greatly appreciated as I am confused.

    thanks
    james

Bestshooter, you'll need to give a bit more information about location, soil type, and care before a good guess can be made. However, my shot in the dark: Too much fertilizer and too little water.

Young trees do not need feeding. Get those spikes out of there. (Older trees rarely need it.) They _do_ need frequent watering--once or twice per week is good.

The good news is that, if they've got any leaves at all, they're not dead yet and can come roaring back. If the problem is only lack of water, then this can happen relatively quickly.

    Good luck!

RE: Need some help with my trees.. they seem to be dying??

I have trees that struggled through a year or two as little twigs, but some of them are really shooting up this year.

Of course, we've had a good amount (excessive amount!) of rain, and that's kept them happy. I have some hemlocks (slow growing, and in shade, which slows them down even more) that have put on 6" or more, where they didn't do anything but sit there for the previous two years.

I've also lost quite a few to deer, other rodents, or pure chance.

I worry a bit less, do what I can, make sure they have the right amount of water, and, of course, make sure they're planted correctly in a suitable location - some make it, some don't.
    Cheers,
    Everett

    Laserboy,
I live in central ga. My soil type is clay, and I water my area almost everyday for an hour or so. I t is a big area so it just dampens the gound. I planted my trees just as all the instructions have said and there shouldnt be any problems with my trees I live in the peach state, my peach trees should grow. As for the fertilizer stakes I only fertilized the older apple tree and the plum tree. I will post some pictures later to show some of these trees and their issues,,

Hmmm, sounds like you avoided all the usual suspects.
I don't have any other brilliant ideas, offhand. The only other thought that occurs is that you may be watering too much. It doesn't sound that way, from your description, however.

The fact that you're getting _some_ leaves, even if it's only a few, is very encouraging, however. It shows that the trees _are_ alive and growing. They may limp this year and then thrive next year.

I hope someone else can give more useful information. Good luck!
