    pruning young trees

I've got a little pine tree I started from seed; it's probably a year old or thereabouts. It's now perhaps six inches tall, but it's just one single spike. How do I get it to branch? Do I just wait, or should I pinch it back? It's in a little pot on a windowsill inside - I don't even know what kind it is and if I can move it outside! Maybe I'll post a picture later...

I think that is normal for a pine, it will start to branch as it gets a little larger, taller, and older.

    RE: pruning young trees

Here is a picture; I've also included some pictures of a couple little citrus trees I need help with. The first is three trees in one pot; I ordered them from a magazine a couple years ago, and now they obviously need some pruning. What should I do?
The second citrus is probably a grapefruit, and I started it from seed maybe 3-4 years ago. It's one of my favorites - it just has such beautiful dark shiny leaves! But then I read somewhere recently that you need to prune them to encourage branching. How can I do this without spoiling the tree? Or should I prune it at all? It's really doing quite well with nothing more than watering and occasional fertilizing.
I apologize for the poor pictures. Let me know if you need better ones.
Oh, if anyone has any idea what kind of pine tree this is, I'd appreciate knowing - though I don't know if it can be identified so young.
    Thanks so much!

The pine is completely normal for that age. Don't prune it. Really, with pines you never want to prune the terminal to encourage branching. They're meant to grow with a strong central leader.

I would say that the citrus are too young to think about pruning, as well.

When do they get to live outside with the other trees?

Well, the citrus would never survive our winters, but I suppose I could put the little pine out - it came from a seed company in Maine, so I guess it should do all right outside.

Hey, how come "Acorn" is now under my username? Does that mean I've advanced a little in the forum?

Yes that's what it means. Maybe someday you will advance to oak. I keep asking if there's an eventual ranking of "ream of paper", "kitchen cabinet", "box of kleenex" but I don't think the moderators are amused by my tomfoolery.

Remer temperate trees need to live outside. I'm sure the citrus can stay inside for winter but some trees actually do need a good chilling.
