RE: Heartbroken - Windblasted Smoke Tree

Thentavius, Albuquerque is a tough place to grow _anything_! I lived there for ten years. Now that I live in the midwest, I'm just stunned at how _easy_ growing things is out here: My land is covered with weeds because my wife and I still have our desert instinct: "It's growing, it's alive, for goodness sake don't _touch_ it!"

Keep nurturing the little guys and they'll make it. Congratulations on the successes that you've had!

P.S. A bowl of green chile stew at the Frontier will always make you feel better!

Nice to meet you! I love the Frontier's smoked rotisseri chicken!!

I am just amazed at the Smoke Tree. He must be one tough little dude to withstand the weird and violent weather here. And the dirt.

I know EXACLTY what you mean. OUr backyard is mostly taken over by wild native eggplant relatives because they are actually ALIVE and GROWING! LOL.

    Don't touch it! It's GREEEN!

Glad you're enjoying your new area!

RE: Heartbroken - Windblasted Smoke Tree (Update)

Just thought I would share the progress of that tough little smoke tree as it braves the Albuquerque weather.

Here is what it looked like on 6/09/07. The fence behind it is a little over 4' tall.

RE: Heartbroken - Windblasted Smoke Tree

And here is what the smoke tree looks like today, 7.25.07:

It's actually peeking over the fence now! This is the same tiny little smoke tree that I purchased from the Arbor Day store in 2006, which was at the time abut 12" tall.

    Hi Thentavius,

Sorry I haven't responded before now but I've been ill and I'm trying to catch up with posts here. Your pics of your smoketree are great! Thanks for the update! How did the cedar fare after all this time?

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

RE: Heartbroken - Windblasted Smoke Tree

Posting an updated pic of the smoke tree.

Wow. He's sure come a long way. I'll snap another photo during the autumn when the leaves are turned. The tree has grown even more since this photo was taken in early summer.

Can you believe how transformed that sandy side yard has become, after 3 years? The red leaf sand cherry is bigger and healthier, too.

Doing well in the hot, sandy soil here.

The Arizona Cypress is also doing well. Fattened up a lot, with about 3 extra feet at the crown since the last photo.
