Please help identify flowering & fruiting tree (Austin, TX)

I have a wonderful tree in my backyard that I am trying to identify. It has just begun flowering, and it fruited in the fall/winter. I have included a picuture of the fruit, though I didn't take one when it was fresh and this one is completely dried out. The fruit was a purplish color and looked edible. Of course, I didn't eat it because I'm not crazy, but it remined me of a prune or a plumb. I've looked online but I can't find a plant like it.

    More information (to help out):
    • Does not lose it's leaves
      Leaves are max 2-3"
      I live in Austin, TX
      Tree is ~8-10 feet tall
      Flowers have no strong sent
Flowest have 4 main petals, lots of stamen, and one pistil (I hope I have my terminology correct)
Fruit is purpleish and around an inch in length
Leaves are symetrical on the branch (don't know what that's called)

Anyway, I would greatly appreciate any help. I really like the tree, but I just would love to know what it is. Thanks.

Tricky one! Your description and pictures are very good. When you crush a leaf between your fingers, do you notice any scent?

I'm trying to narrow it down to the Family level. Right now I'm thinking olive family (Oleaceae), or maybe Myrtaceae (edit: nah, probably Myrtaceae rather than Oleaceae, upon further reflection of the flower). We will get this figured out for you.

Eureka! I think I've got it.

I think you've got a pineapple guava there, Acca (=Feijoa) sellowiana. It's in the Myrtaceae family. There are a number of cultivated varieties, some for fruit, some for flower qualities, etc. I understand the fruit generally don't mature in your area, but the shape (if not the size) of the one in your pic appears correct. It's supposed to be a desireable species for central Texas.

Here's a link with an example for comparison:

Wow. That is definately right! Thank you so much. This is exciting. I googled the name from your description and read this:

    Blooming Habits:
The grafted Feijoas should start producing within a couple of years, seedlings can take 4 to 6 years or more. The flowers come in late spring and have fleshy petals that are slightly sweet with an interesting delicate flavor. These petals can be added to salads.

    Fruiting Habits:
Many clones are not self-fertile and needs another pineapple guava to act as the pollinator. The green fruit is abundant if the flowers have been pollinated properly, although always less in the deserts. It is edible, and rather tasty. Depending on the temperature, it ripens in 4 to 7 months.
    'Nazemetz' is a self-fertile variety.
Now, I think this must be a Nazemetz, because this thing produced a ton of fruit, and when I took the fruit apart it looked ripe and tasty. I absolutely adore this tree, and it's even more exciting knowing I can eat the fruit if I want. Like you said, the fruit might not mature fully and might not be good, but on the flip side, I can eat it and I won't die.

Thank you so much for your help.
