giant maple tree taking over the world!

i live in my family home that was built in the 1930's, at about that time my very green thumbed grandmother planted a gorgeous maple tree behind the house. i love the tree, it's beautiful all year long, shades the western side of the house, and tops the second story by about 10 or 15 ft now. it's also absolutely healthy...doesn't sound like i have much of a problem does it, lol?

well, here's the bad part...the yard and gardens around this house have largely been left alone for the last 45 years (since my grandmother died) and there are maple trees of all sizes...from tiny sticks, to 20 or 30 ft tall all around the border of the yard. i've recently renewed an interest in gardening that i've had on hold for about 25 years while i brought up my children and focused on my career...i'd love to be able to bring the landscape around the house into something my grandmother would be proud of. but, i'm really ignorant, lol!

I've dug up a bunch of saplings and given them to friends, but not many people have room in their yards for more than one lovely maple that will mature at 70 to 80 ft tall. what causes this problem? is it just the seeds? what do you recommend to reduce the maple population around here? I think i'd like to keep the most mature trees, as they form a divider between us and the funeral home next door. most of them are on the north and west sides of the yard (i guess mowing the yard has kept them from growing all over the back yard.) also, i'd really like to get a bit more sun in the back yard...there's very little space that recieves full sun, the grass only has to be mowed twice a year, and the one area that has full sun is becoming my climbing rose bed.

i'd like to put some smaller ornamental trees and shrubs into the yard, but with all the maples that's problematic. anyone have any ideas how to keep the forest at bay?

perhaps i should mention it's a sugar maple and it's fall color is the highlight of the yard! there are a few others this age in our neighborhood, in the yards of some of my grandmother's old we have a beautiful fall in this neighborhood.

Planting turf usually does the trick. If you have planting beds next to a wooded area, I'm sure you will have babies popping up all the time. I find it hard to pull these out so sometimes I pot them up and plant them on the side of the road somewhere that needs a tree. I'm a little nutty though.

i don't think that sounds a matter of fact it's a great idea! also, that gives me another idea...i'll check with the national parks (we have several very close to here) and see if they might want a few of these babys, and some not so young, too. i hate for them to go to waste when i know how lovely they are when they grow up.
