    Evergreen blues

I live in southeastern PA and I tried posting a messsage eariler with no success so I decided to try agian this time with a photo. I planted this Douglas Fir last December and it has done very poorly since. It is in full sun, well drained soil and protected from high winds. The birds that come to my feeders love to use it before and after they feed. I tried pruning the orange needles off last spring but that did not help. I really would love to save this tree and I am very concerned that if action is not taken soon it will surely die. I would like to have a plan of action in place before spring. I have read that this may be a fungal infection and I plan on using a fungicide once the weather breaks. Does anybody have any suggestions about how to best save my tree! Can anybody identify the cause of this disease before it spreads or occurs again. I know that apple trees and cedars can share a fungal disease, can the neighboring apple tree infect my Fir?

    RE: Evergreen blues

Without seeing the tree in person, I cannot responsibly identify the problem. I would recommend getting a professional diagnosis from a certified arborist or your county extension agent. The picture does appear to show signs of tip blight, a needle fungus. Tip blights are very common on many evergreen trees and usually fairly difficult to control. Best control is usually obtained when sprayed with a fungicide before and after bud break, spacing the applications about 2 - 4 weeks apart. A few important things....not all fungicides will control all fungi. It is important to identify what is attacking your tree before you decide on a plan of action or you stand to lose money and your tree. Most types of fungi are plant specific so it is unlikely that something would have jumped over from your apples. It was more then likely carried on an insect and spread through irrigation or rainfall.
