    sick newly planted evergreens

I had seven evergreens planted in my yard in the Spring of this year. Each is approximately 8 to ten feet tall. I mulched, (taking care to keep the mulch away from the base), and when it doesn't rain for a while, have been watering them with a root ball leaching system, (5 galon bucket w/a spike in the ground.) The insides of most of the trees seems to be drying out and yellowing. The needles becoming brittle. Am I watering too much? Too little?

    Thanks for any help,
    Mark

What types of evergreens are these and what USDA zone or state do you live in?

Were you present when the trees were planted?

No, I was not present when they were planted. Apparently, the guy uses some kind of machine to remove a ball of soil, then drop the tree in the hole. He did leave soil "burms" around the outside of the root ball area.

It sounds like the trees were in poor condition to begin with in my opinion.

If your containerized trees die and they are still under guarantee, ask to inspect the condition of the roots of the new trees before they are replanted. The roots should look white and healthy, not brown and dry.

If the hole for the trees are dug using an auger it is best to slope the sides before planting the tree. Take a look at these videos on the How To Plant Trees to see what I mean.

    http://www.arborday.org/trees/video/howtoplant.cfm

When the trees are replanted check your soil drainage too.

"A well-drained landscape soil should drain a 24-inch column of water in 24 hours or less. To determine if your site is well-drained, conduct a percolation test by augering or digging a hole 24 inches deep. Fill the hole with water and allow to drain completely. Fill the hole with water a second time soon after the first filling is completely drained. The second filling should take 24 hours or less to completely drain. If the hole still contains water after 24 hours, it is considered poorly drained . . .to some degree."

Make sure the trees aren't planted too deep. This often happens with potted & containerized nursery stock.
