I have a weeping willow tree about 45 feet tall with a trunk about 24 inches in diameter. The trunk splits into a three prong fork about six feet off the ground. I am a little worried about a strong wind splitting the tree at the fork and the hugh limbs falling on my new sunroom. Would it help if I somehow tied the three branching limbs together with cables or rods to strengthen the structure or would this just make it worst? If I should support the limbs, what is the best method to do so and how high above the fork should this be accomplished? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
When trees are improperly pruned this situation can arise. These are called codominant leaders and such situations usually result in the high winds or ice splitting the tree right down the middle.
