    Termites in mulch?

I've noticed that the regions of mulch around some of my young saplings are infested with termites. The trees are all far from my house, so I'm not concerned about them doing damage to the house, but are they any threat to the trees? My guess is that termites in mulch are inevitable and that they aren't a threat to live wood, but I'd love to hear this confirmed by someone who knows more about this than I do.

Should I worry? If so, are there any suggestions as to remedy?

    Thanks!

You're correct, termites aren't a threat to your trees unless they already have significant areas of rot within them. The main concern is damage to nearby structures.

I don't know where you're located but maybe you'll have better success with pinestraw (needles) mulch if you can get it. Not that critters don't like it but maybe it's not as appealing.

    RE: Termites in mulch?

We have a rumor in our area that termites and other bugs don't like ceader. Lowe's here sells ceader mulch. So, that's what all my trees and especially the near house flower beds get.

    RE: Termites in mulch?

I'm just across the river from Toronado3800 (Edwardsville, IL--a few miles from St. Louis, MO), so I may give the cedar a shot. I don't have any new plantings near the house, so I'm really unconcerned about the critters getting into my structure. (I live in an earth-shelter house anyway, so there's very little they could do to my house in any event: There's wood inside, but they'd have to get through a thick layer of metal covered by several feet of soil covered by sod to get to it! All of the internal wood structure is salvaged barnwood, so it's already survived _many_ years of potential termite exposure without getting eaten.) Indeed, I presume the termites are a component of the transformation of mulch to soil. As long as the trees are safe, I think I'll let them be.

    Thanks for the input, folks!
