    Black Walnut help

I got my black walnut tree a few weeks ago, it came shipped a little earlier than I expected, so I had to wait a couple weeks before planting it because I am finishing up some cutting in my back yard and didnt want it damaged by falling branches ( not cutting my choice, we had a very heavy snowfall last march which broke some big limbs off most of my trees)

So back to my story, I bought a Black walnut, two red oaks and I got my free red maple. I had them sitting in the corner of my kitchen in the package, and the black walnut and the maple started to sprout, about a week later the black walnut started getting some black edges on some of the leaves, so I decided I better get it in some soil. So I put them in some pots that I had from some trees I put in my front yard. The maple is doing great, however the walnut still seems to be dying, every couple days another limb dies off of it, I am keeping it watered, I planeted them in soil used for starting off trees, I dont understand whats going on with it. I really want to be able to save it, Black walnut is one of my favorite trees. I am in zone 5-6 in North East PA

One thing I did notice, the walnut didn have much root, it looks like it was cut a bit shorter than it should have, it was only about 8" long, and no branches off of it.

    RE: Black Walnut help

My girlfriend dug a black walnut seedling out of the flower bed last week and put it in a pot. The poor thing is shriveled beyond belief. I have plenty of mature walnuts around so I've never transplanted any but I was thinking it might not take transplanting too well. Give it a few weeks. Maybe it will recover, maybe not.

Next time try to get it into any dirt quicker and try to avoid the pots. Too many things to worry about. Drainage, soil compaction, root temperature.

It has been very dry and hot in the Northeast over the last few weeks. There is a good chance that it is suffering from that. There is a good chance it will make it. Yound trees have a habit of letting "excess" foliage die off until their roots are established.

    Don't drown it with overwatering.

We ship everything at planting time and the instructions say that if you cannot plant them that they should be put in a temporary place (heeling in). They won't last more than a few days in a hot corner of the kitchen without waking up. Once a bare-root tree has started to grow leaves and it's not in the ground you might as well not even plant it. It has very little chance of living. The same thing goes for pots. Bare-root trees should not be planted in pots because tree roots need to be 55F in order to grow properly (this also happens to be the temperature of the soil a few inches down) and the soil in pots is the same temperature as the outside air. Pots also encourage unhealthy root structures.
Trees must be transplanted and planted when the leaves are off of them. Digging up actively growing trees usually results in a fatality.
You can receive a replacement black walnut for 1/2 price plus shipping in the fall, if you like.

Thank You.. Since I did it incorrectly, I will pay for a new one if I loose this one. I appreciate the offer though.

I do have another question regarding pots. Just about every local landscaping place I have been to all sells trees that are planted in pots, alot of which started getting leaves back in March. Is something done different to allow them to get started in pots? Is it just a case of improper handeling? Just wondering, Thanks again for your info.

    RE: Black Walnut help

Thanks for all the responses. RIght now it still has some branches, it seems to have ceased loosing any more of them, there is a small sprout that is starting at the top of it, It just may pull through Based on what I read here, I think I had best wait till the end of fall to remove it from the pot, right now, I have the pot buried (but easilly removable) to keep it cool. I will just keep my fingers crossed.
