    Storm Damage to Silver Maple

I have an estimated 70+ year old maple tree. In the Omaha '08 "Gust-nado" storm it suffered quite a bit of damage. There are 4 leaders from the trunk. 3 have new growth (suckers), but the growth is yellow (chlorotic). The tree trimmer recommended removing these 3 leaders entirely. Will the tree then be unbalanced with only 1 leader, and subject to leaning/falling? Or is it old enough that the root system can support removing the 3 leaders? The tree trimmer said one leader is fine and it's no different than when OPPD trims trees in funny shapes to clear power lines. What do you think?

It's tough to say without seeing it.

Normally multiple trunks in maturity on weak wooded tree like silver maple is not desirable. That's why these multi-stemmed maples so many nurseries are selling are not advisable.

That said, modeling tree surgery after what the utility company butchers just sounds like the worst possible idea!!
Canopies are sometimes trimmed into a "Y" formation to make space for the wires but they're balanced and even then, we're talking about branches in the canopy, not trunks. This doesn't sound like it would be balanced.

I'd get a second opinion from an ISA certified arborist and I suspect their recommendation is going to be complete removal.

Trees from the Acer family like silver maple and box elder like to multi stem while the sugar maple are single trunks. If it was a young tree I would say have the tree trimmer shape it and with time the tree will "grow over" the pruning cuts.

It sounds like your tree wasn't able to heal it's wounds from the prevois storm. That's common on trees that had large limbs removed. You could have a number of things working to decay the exposed wood. It's probably time to take it down. Get a few prices; Sometimes a trimming is the same cost as removal
