    Drive by ...

Driving home from a fishing trip there was a line of trees that caught my eye. We didn't stop to take a photo of them but went online trying to identify these trees. Unable to do so, I went through google maps and using street view, I believe I found the same trees but at a younger age. Please, if you can tell me what these are, I would be forever grateful. Here is a picture I found from the interweb. We were fishing in Port Maitland, not far from Port Dover in Ontario. These trees were seen on Highway 3 between Port Colborne and Wainfleet.

Currently the trees are about 12-14 feet tall. The trunk is very smooth starting with thick and sturdy base and narrowing near the top. The branches kind of make it look like a palm tree. Perhaps the owner has pruned the tree in this manner but they did a fantastic job. I will return to the site again in a few weeks and try to snap some current pictures. Thank you in advance.

    RE: Drive by ...

Almost any tree will do that if you butcher it.

Please don't do that. It's "neat" but it doesn't look good and it offers no benefits and no value to the property. And if anyone ever stops pruning them, they'll turn into weak wooded hazards.

My guess is they are cherries. That's what they look like from a distance.

Since you're going back to take pictures, why not go knock on the door and ask them about the trees.

I've seen crab apples trimmed that way, Since it was across the street I can tell you when they need trimming every couple years it was an all day affair.
One of the nicest shots is on the Arbor Day Home page of the Maples lining the road.
There's a dirt road I drive that has 300 yr old white oaks lining both sides, It's quite moving along with another drive way that's quite long with weeping willows lining both sides that was probably planted 50+ years ago. So really there's many ways to line roads which don't require so much clipping.

In addition, if what you want is a munchkin sized lollipop, there's certain cultivars that will take that shape and/or species that would be smaller to begin with.

Now you've really got me thinking[not really a bad thing] ---But I can't think of a native species that would maintain healthy branch structure.
I always favor the native trees since they resist drought, birds and squirrels need them and in some cases provide bees with nectar. I've been thinking of planting some silver maples in a row along the road but setting them back 40 feet from the road.
Then in the open area between the road and maples plant some crab-apples, dogwood, or nine bark.
I think it would really look sharp having the tall maples and the understory trees. I like the branching pattern of dogwoods and perhaps White Oaks with their unique branching pattern.
Hazelnuts would lend themselves to some fancy trimming and could be planted in a maze effect.
