I want to pot this plant....

But I don't know how deep it's roots might go or the proper way of digging out a sapling to place in a pot. I don't want it where the landlord might weedwhack it any day now. Some info would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure this is a blackthorn or honeylocust, but I'd be thrilled if it was a Silktree Mimosa like the one that grew down the street....until the landlord of THAT property whacked it...

I don't think it would be mimosa. And be glad as they are highly overrated and are a major pest.

By process of elimination, if this is in CT, I'd say it's probably black locust. Although black locust is native to parts of the country, unfortunately in your neck of the woods, it is an invasive pest. It's hard to judge the size of the leaves from the pics. Honey locust is another possibility but if this wasn't planted and there aren't any others nearby I'm guessing it's black locust.

A black locust should show some thorns by now I would think. While a native honeylocust would normally have thorns also, a thornless female will produce thornless offspring. The bottom leaf from the initial sprout looks like the bazillions of little honeylocusts that I see every year. That's my guess.

Look for a mature honeylocust in the area producing seeds. They are long green bean like pods. They may have a yellowish-green color this time of year (turning dark brown) and are quite conspicuous.

I don't know. I've never seen them almost anywhere else except where they are planted. In fact, I've only seen three, and the one that was down the street was there for a good 75+ years and never spread beyond a single sapling that grew about 40 feet from the parent. The tree was surrounded by vacant lots and never seemed to go anywhere else. I still want a Silktree, but a Black Locust would be fine as well...although it's the Black Locusts that I see EVERYWHERE. There are some 60-70 foot specimens in a lot just one house away from us.

If you want me looking for long green pods, then it's definitely NOT a honey locust. The trees around here grow short black/brown pods roughly 3-4 inches long. Usually only containing between 8-10 seeds.

Mimosa hasn't become the pest up in new england that it has farther to the south. But the potential may exist for it to become one.

Sounding more and more like black locust by the minute. Flat or twisted pods?

Flat, but curved like a banana. Very thin.

Damn...oh well. I can consider this practice for when the Silktree down the street goes to seed.
