types of mulch for fruit trees

    just a quick question...

i used shredded cedar mulch for all my evergreen and acid loving trees/shrubs.

is cedar mulch OK for fruit trees (apricot, peach, fig, plum), or is hardwood or root mulch better? will cedar mulch hurt the (young) fruit trees.

    many thanks,

Cedar is a great choice for mulch and shouldn't acidify your soil any more than any other type of mulch (in fact, anything that decomposes into the soil tends to acidify slightly as it decays) - I tend to use cedar mulch across the board as it is a natural insect repellent and decays more slowly than other types of shredded hardwood or bark mulches. Mulch is one of the best means of keeping trees healthy, it helps maintain a consistent soil temperature and also aids in moisture retention during dry spells. Avoid mulching directly up to the trunk, leave a 4-6" gap around the diameter of the trunk base.

    thanks for the feedback....

i am definitely not a "mulch volcano" gardener... i keep it away from the trunk and not more than 3-4" deep
