New World's Tallest Hemlock - over 80 meters tall

Right on the heels of the January 2011 tallest Pines discovery, is a new tallest Hemlock discovery.

Over 271 feet tall, in Prairie Creek redwoods

Named "Tsunami" after the big wave that hit the redwood coast of northern California.

    That is amazing!
I ordered Western Hemlocks and they did not live here. After more experience with other Tsauga types I think my mistake was planting them overly exposed. My Carolina Hemlocks in the woods are doing fine but any that were exposed didn't make it through spring.

I didn't know you had tsugas out there.
Lets hope the wooly buggers don't find it.

The Western hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla do exceptionally well here. There are hoards of them in the coast mountains too. Bugs are not much of a problem with them.

One of my favorite evergreens actually. Planted several at our last home, but did not have room at this place

    (Yet !!)

    Update ...

I found out late last year, that a man Atkins, who also explores with us, found another Western Hemlock almost as tall, in the same park. Just a foot shorter.

That's sort of weird. When I found the current world record Hemlock, that skipped over the entire 260s range. I would have thought we'd find some more 240s, 250s or 260s first. But the next find also turns out to reach the 270 mark.

At least that leaves a spare in case the first find ever blows over or something.

I'm testing out some Canadian Hemlocks at my place, now. If I don't kill them after a couple more years, they will be my new "fence" hedge.
