    arbavortee(sp?) question.

as in what type soil do they do well in?. i live on a bluff which is basically a huge pile of clay soil. extremely hard soil when it dries out and it never dries out in a wet year. in a dry year it takes a very hardy plant of any type to survive on it. would an arbavortee tree be able to handle both wet and dry years on my clay knob or should i put them down near the bottom of the bluff (good black dirt and wetter). i've done some research and arbovortee from what i read are fairly adaptable.

trees are pricey so i hate to put them in the wrong place. any advice would be appreciated

forgot to say i'm in iowa (zone 5 i think).

    thanks
    scott

    RE: arbavortee(sp?) question.

Arborvitaes will grow just about anywhere, like most trees they do best in well-drained soils. If your soil is wet most of the year, your best bet would be to bring in some topsoil and build up a berm that elevates those trees about 6-8" above grade. This will help the Arborvitaes adapt to the conditions and prevent them from drowning during a rainy year. Never plant a tree too deep, especially in clay - the roots need to be above grade so they can get adequate oxygen. Whether you use mounds or a berm is up to you, berm's are typically easier to deal with but require more topsoil.

Very few tree species will thrive in wet/poorly-draining soils, nearly all of the trees I planted around my 2-acre lot (I'm surrounded by heavy clay farm fields, so none of the soil around me drains very well) had to be planted on a mound or a berm.
