    Crowded Leyland Cyrpess Trees

We have eight Leyland Cypress trees approx 10 years old that are all pretty healthy; no cankers or diseases yet. They were planted in two rows, 8 feet apart, in a staggered pattern.

They are now crowding each other and the ones in the back row have bare areas where they are touching the ones in the front row and the ones in the front are starting to have the same zones too.

We think that we need cut down the ones in the front. What is the best time of year given that we live in zone 7, (Washington DC area)? Can we rejuvenate the bare zones of the ones that remain? If so do we just do a good/hard pruning? Suggestions?! Info- or helpful sites much appreciated!

Not with Leylands but its been my experience with other trees bare spots on mature trees fill in slowly.

The bare spots are pretty normal for branches in some shade. Just look at forest trees vs open grown. Nothing unusual about it, in a way more natural.

Not sure on the "best" time of year to cut an evergreen. I try to remove deciduous trees when the weather is nice and they have no leaves. Less messy clean up and I can see the branch structure better. If you're worried about the other trees I'd pick a time when they're not brittle and frozen in the event a tree you're cutting bounces off one you want to save. Not sure if there is a time to "thin the herd" that will encourage those you save to grow.

If the purpose of the trees is a windbreak or a screen I wouldn't cut any of them down. If you just think it will look better, cut them down whenever you have the time.

I'm not sure if those will re-sprout, but you may want to treat the outside edge of the freshly-cut stump with some full-strength (concentrate) weed killer.

Would be nice to see photo.

They won't really grow in winter, so the grove might act as a better windbreak for each other until spring unless you plan to plant this winter.

Sometimes I phase out the ones to be removed, slowly pruning them away from those which shall remain. Hard to say without seeing them.

Here, individual Leyland cypress trees get 45 feet wide in 20 years. Or 22 feet wide in 10 years. Slower in rows.
