    questions about a young tree

We live in southern New Jersey and we have a young tree that we planted
at the curb. It is a maple, but we're not sure which kind. It is three years old.
It has grown very tall, but is not growing any significant lateral
branches. It looks like a whip. We have it staked but it is getting to
long for the stakes, and now it is starting to lean because there are no
branches to balance its growth. Is there anything we can do to prune it
to make lateral branches grow? There are plenty of short little twigs
with lots of leaves. We certainly don't want to "top" it.

Also, the leaves have these brown spots on them. We're not sure what that is.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Re: questions about a young tree

I would stake it loosely so it is not supported under normal conditions. Unless is has some stress on it, it will not develop enough thickness to support itself, similar to a non stressed muscle. There are a number of ways to engineer that and it mostly depends on what you have laying around the house to use. I cut the bottom out of a Cool Whip bowl for one of my trees similar to yours and suspended (and padded) it where the tree only leaned on it in windy conditions.

Other than that, I'd leave it alone and let it do its thing.

Looks like a norway maple. Very slow growers.

RE: questions about a young tree

Being that you do not know for sure what kind it is this could be typical for this sub-type of Maple.

Their are many different kinds of 'tall & skinny' maple tree types.
For example The Columnar Norway Maple gets to be 35'T X 15'W, and many other kinds like the Easy Street Maple that get to be 40'T X 20'W.

Stake it and see what happens As someone else here already pointed out Norway Maples grow pretty slow and your selection could just be an upright growing tree.

RE: questions about a young tree

Be carefull with the stakeing tho as that could be part of this trees leaning problem as it never developed a strong supporting root system becase of the staking. Any time I plant a new tree I stake it for the first full growing season and then take the stakes off for good that first fall and they are on their own from that point on and all of my trees are pretty straight and it gets very windy up here in central minnesota.

Never top the tree either. If this tree is not what you are looking for just cut it down or dig it up and plant it somewhere else and then replace that blvd. tree with something else more desireable in that location.

If you are looking for a more rounded, fuller Maple selection try an October Glory or a Red Sunset Maple cultivar.

Hope this helps, good luck with whatever you decide.
