Fruit tree ID needed for a friend- edible or not?

My friend and her husband just bought a piece of acreage and have this tree on their land but don't know what it is, and do not want to eat the fruit until they do. Does anyone know what it is and if it's okay to eat it? Thanks.

Could it be some kind of plum?

This is a Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana). Yes, the fruit is edible and delicious, but not until it is fully ripened. The fruit pictured on the right is green and would be very sour (bitter?) and completely unpalatable. The fruit on the left is faulty, probably ruined by worms? Here in the South we say that the fruit can't be eaten until the first frost, but I have observed some that were ripe before then, and some that were still not ripe. When it is ripe the fruit will turn a light orange or salmon color, the skin will be slightly translucent and wrinkled and the fruit will be soft. Only then is it edible, and to me, quite tasty.

Oh, thank you! We were thinking the purple ones were ripe, good thing we found out they were only worm ridden! I'll tell her to look for the orange color, I hope some survive the worms. Usually doesn't frost here until almost Halloween, sometimes later, will it take that long to ripen? Thanks again!

I guess sometimes the fruit could mature before the frost. Just make sure it is soft and wrinkled (usually) before you eat it, otherwise it will not be a pleasant experience!

If it's going to take that long, the worms will probably get most of them. She wanted to make some jelly.

I guess they're native to this area since it has 'Virginia' in part of its scientific name?

Yes, it's native range appears to be from MA and NY south of FL, west to TX and north to NE. Of course, as you say, it was named after Virginia, where it was, presumably, originally collected and named by botanists.

Like the time I bit into the fruit of a flowing quince. Ilovetrees, listen to this guy: he knows his stuff!

I don't care how soft or how orange they get, they are yucky. If you bite into one just slightly unripe, your mouth will be puckered up for a week. My huge family lives for the persimmons and paw paws to get ripe, and they are the only two fruits in the world I don't like.
    Sunny!

The planting of trees is the least self-centered of all that we can do. It is a purer act of faith than the procreation of children.
