RE: I want to pot this plant....

A black locust should show some thorns by now I would think. While a native honeylocust would normally have thorns also, a thornless female will produce thornless offspring. The bottom leaf from the...

    RE: Bark Challenge

Persimmon would be my guess. I had often wondered about a tree at a local school that had bark just like that. Just last week I noticed the large fruit, decided to look it up and concluded it was...

    RE: Apple Tree Pruning

I would just take a pruning saw and saw it from the outside in. Go slow so you don't cut into the leader.

Ask one of the construction workers. They would probably know.

If you find out how old the school is, that might be the answer. It looks like an old style building, so it seems certain to be over 100 years old.

Re: Looking for tree seeds! Especially Oaks

I would think you could find some oaks at a park or school somewhere nearby.

RE: Disposal of tree branches and small logs

Constructing brush piles is considered woodland improvement. It creates nesting spots for birds, rabbits and other critters. That's what I'd do and have done quite a few times.

Re: RE: Holy crap, fall is here already...

Mine usually has lost most leaves by the end of July. Most around here seem to have a similar habit. Ironically, this year it has retained most until now.

Walnuts and Black Cherries are losing...
  9. RE: Moving a young willow tree from Ohio to Oregon

Why not plant a different tree in that person's memory? Then there is one in both places. It would be easier for me to leave a live tree (and plant a new one) than to transport a potentially dead...

    RE: Tree selection ideas

Tamarack is a cold area tree and I think southern Indiana may be too warm for them. The DNR site might even mention they are suggested for northern Indiana only.

I really like the Dawn Redwoods....

    Re: RE: Late-summer drought

I've never heard that before. Can individual trees develop drought tolerance over their lifetime? Or is it just the ones with a predisposition for it who are able to survive a drought?

    Any other...

    RE: Exotic Redbud

The 3rd season of growth after planting seems to be when most of mine seem to start making significant progress.

    Re: RE: Late-summer drought

I'm doubting he can string a hose to this baby forest or it wouldn't be such an issue. I kind of have a similar issue. I can water things within 100 ft or so of a spigot pretty easily, but more...

    RE: Premature Leaf Drop

I doubt they got too much water. I have a lot of walnuts behind my house that thrive on the fringe of a swampy area. They get a bad rap for slow growth but I think they need more water than the...

    Re: Exotic Redbud

They grow continuously. That doesn't mean a newly planted one will put on much, if any, new growth however.

    RE: Bee Attracting Bush

The bees will have no problem finding the apple trees. Bees will visit practically anything that flowers. Plant what you like. A lack of bees won't be a problem.

FYI, Virginia Creeper is significantly different than wild grape vines.

    Re: RE: Tree transplanted help

I think Tulip Trees are related to Magnolias, but they are not poplars or directly related to them. The common colloquial name of "Tulip Poplar" is a misnomer. Good supporting evidence would be the...

RE: Some likely common tree ID's around my home

Telling us where you live helps a lot.

The last one looks like a Black Willow or one of the other similar willows.

    Re: The power company

You can probably sue for up to $5,000 or so in small claims court, no lawyer needed.

    RE: Tree ID

Wild grape vines are very prodigious around where I live. They can be a problem by shading out trees and the vines can get thick enough that you need a chainsaw to cut them. They are a good food...

    Re: Tree ID

Looks like a Boxelder to me, which is a crappy weed tree.

FWIW, if you see that 3 leaf pattern on a vine, it's probably poison ivy.
  24. RE: Need assistance ID'ing a downed tree. Maybe a Black Gum?

Black Gum would be my guess too.
  25. Re: Need assistance ID'ing a downed tree. Maybe a Black Gum?

The species occurs naturally as far south as Florida and as far north as Michigan. Do you have a picture?
