    RE: trees not making it

It sounds like you heavily amended the soil. I wouln't do that next time. Put those $2 trees in $2 holes. Spend the money on mulch if you have to(but don't let it crowd the tree's base).

    With that...

    RE: Mystery Maples

For the first one, check Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum) to confirm.

For the second, I'm not sure. It could be a sugar maple? At least by the leaf, but I can't really tell the scale.

    RE: Help with Tree ID

I would guess hedge maple -acer campestre - or some cultivar of it

If you look them up, the first pictures you find won't have leaves that pronounced, but one of my tree book's example leaf photo...

RE: "Source" of ADF's Dawn Redwoods??

Thanks. I was just curious since I had read a paper about the potential weakening of the stock in certian trees that had limited source material. I'm sure the DR stock is fine though. More of a...

    RE: Tree advice

how far are they from the house?

FWIW, I had planted four Hybrid Poplars in a corner arrangement last year and decided to pull them all after reading about 'em.

    We get too many thunderstorms...

    RE: Tree advice

Once you get an ID on the tree and search for info about it, that may give you the best ideas for what to do.

If you can afford to have a pro come out and find a solution, the earlier you do it,...

    RE: Tree advice

if you have the time and would like the "look" of it, you might like to put about 3-4" of much around the whole area and create a "tree island."

it will cut down on mowing, tripping over the roots...

    "Source" of ADF's Dawn Redwoods??

So I'm wondering now if the foundation can provide original source information for some of their trees.

I know it is a long shot, really, but after reading the great work at this site:...

    RE: Wildlife Garden

I had a success rate that was so much better than expected that I've had to dig up several trees after the first season. I over planted expecting a higher failure rate :(

    Re: RE: Wildlife Garden

I have no idea myself. In the general public, they see "10 free trees" and are not expecting the tiny seedlings. I also don't think they expect to have to "follow the instructions" meaning decent...

    RE: Wildlife Garden

    I'm also on a 7/8 transition zone, but more 7 than 8.

I am an advocate for "distraction plants" when trying to grow trees where deer can be a problem for the little ones. Sounds like you've got a...

I don't know where you live (zone, soil, how much room, etc), but if you have room, Pussy Willows can also help make a nice spot for various birds and other critters. I have several from ADF that...
  16. RE: baby arbor day foundation trees? why no fertilizer or top soil etc.

We have the same (or similar) red clay where I live.

I planted nearly all the seedlings right in the clay, and they're all doing fine 8 months on.

The exception for me was some compacted clay...

RE: RED MAPLE IS NOT TURNING...

  19. RE: Arbor Day Japanese Maple, Red Maple, Dawn Redwood

our yard looks funny know with dozens of tiny trees, but in 5...
  20. RE: Arbor Day Japanese Maple, Red Maple, Dawn Redwood

  23. Re: RE: Must see: Redwood special, National Geographic magazine and TV
