RE: HELP - tree damage by heavy snow

There are quite a few good nurseries just across the PA border from you (I'm sure there are some on the NJ side, I just haven't cruised around that much over there to see them! :D ) and Thuja of any...
  2. RE: My trees have fungus, disease or bugs? Need help.

Always do a soil test before adding fertilizer of any kind. Adding compost as ~ or under ~ mulch will generally provide all the nutrients needed.
  3. RE: More growth questions, just the Tuliptree (Yellow Poplar) this time.

Don't pull it, and don't give up on it just yet.

We had a volunteer tuliptree in the back yard:

Year 1: 6" tall, eaten by deer, 2" tall
Year 1: 8" tall, eaten by deer, 2" tall
    Year 1: 2'...

Re: RE: Id this tree please

The whole plant is toxic to humans, although birds enjoy the berries.

That said, I've had poke quiche, made by a local forester, and it was the first time I've ever eaten quiche and enjoyed it... ...

    Re: RE: River Birch growth

Sweet birch is also called black birch, cherry birch, mahogany birch, and spice birch ~ although I've only heard the first two used in conversation, and I've seen the first three listed in reference...

    RE: Help with Tree ID

I've seen that before... it does look similar to some weedy herbaceous plants, but I'm fairly sure I've seen it in a tree book... unfortunately, that book isn't at hand right now...

    RE: Smelly grass clipping pile

    That's the nitrogen talking.

When you get too much green matter in a compost pile, it will smell. Mixing in some brown matter ~ dried leaves, shredded paper ~ will bring a compost pile back into...

RE: Hybrid Poplars - hardiness in question

For the pin oak, wait until your soil is a bit more acidic: it was also in that list (blueberries, azaleas, and rhododendrons) of plants that require acidic soil. I left it off in the other post,...

RE: Eastern White Pines - needles browning

Vinegar is used as a weed killer, but in moderation it might help alter the soil pH to make it more acidic ~ it is, after all, an acid; I expect part or all of its usage as a weed killer is by...
  10. Re: RE: tree fell over and is still alive, need help to support tree and make base of trunk stronger

Some fallen trees can appear to be alive for several years after a fall before the damage catches up with them; others will just readjust for the new vertical and do fine for the rest of their...

    RE: Red Maple growth problem...

It may be that it's still concentrating on root growth ~ that is often the case for the first 2-3 years after planting. This has gone on longer, but if the soil is that heavy, it could still be...

RE: Eastern White Pines - needles browning

It could be transplant shock. Were they bare root or otherwise?

I'd keep an eye on moisture, and also check this link for further help with the diagnosis:

  13. RE: tree fell over and is still alive, need help to support tree and make base of trunk stronger

fusion2, as I replied to you in another post, the Cleveland Select is on the warning list for the mid-Atlantic states, a list which explicitly included both PA (which applied to the other post) and...
  14. RE: tree fell over and is still alive, need help to support tree and make base of trunk stronger

Definitely have an arborist look into it ~ they can tell you if it's possible to save it and if it's worth it.

You've got 10-12 years invested in the tree already; you're not going to be able...

Do you know what variety of dogwood it is?

    RE: tall skinny conifers

I will do fall plantings, and have had them succeed, but bareroot trees from any source definitely seem to have better survival rate with a Spring planting.

    RE: Crabapples

Be careful how close you plant the flowers... they'll grow a lot quicker than the tree, and even if they don't cover/smother the trees, they'll be using the same resources.
