    RE: What is this tree?

I'm thinking this one looks like Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) to me. Google the scientific name and see what you think.

  3. RE: Fruit tree ID needed for a friend- edible or not?

Yes, it's native range appears to be from MA and NY south of FL, west to TX and north to NE. Of course, as you say, it was named after Virginia, where it was, presumably, originally collected and...
  4. RE: Fruit tree ID needed for a friend- edible or not?

I guess sometimes the fruit could mature before the frost. Just make sure it is soft and wrinkled (usually) before you eat it, otherwise it will not be a pleasant experience!
  5. RE: Fruit tree ID needed for a friend- edible or not?

This is a Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana). Yes, the fruit is edible and delicious, but not until it is fully ripened. The fruit pictured on the right is green and would be very sour (bitter?) and...

RE: Help Needed Identifying Awesome Tree

You started off with a hard one! I would say that this is not a native tree to your area, but cultivated from some other part of the world. It is a species of Erythrina or Coral Tree, but since there...

RE: Looks like a plum tree

Purpleleaf Plum (Prunus cerasifera). It is planted for spring blooms and purple foliage. It does bear fruit but I would think that they would not be very tasty.

    RE: ??? Chokecherry? or not?

This is most certainly a species of Amelanchier (Serviceberry or Shadbush). Taking into consideration your location, according to the National Plants Database, there seems to be three possibilities,...

    RE: Yellow tree in VA

I think it is a tree in the same genus as Golden Rain Tree called Flamegold (Koelreuteria elegans ssp. formosana).

RE: Help indentify tree with Broad Leaves

The combination of the location of the tree and, if you zoom in, you can see that the base of the leaf is eared, make this Mountain or Fraser Magnolia (Magnolia fraseri).

Yes, I have two native plums Chickasaw Plum (Prunus angustifolia) in my yard that definitely send out long under roots (called rhizomes if they're underground, stolons if above ground) that come up...

RE: What the Hek Is This

The original post looks like some kind of Plum or Cherry to me. Any of these can have spur shoots that are pretty sharp like those pictured. And some are tremendous sprouters!

Actually if you'll look closely and zoom in on the first picture, upper right corner you'll see a sweetgum ball pretty clearly. I promise I didn't see that before!
