    RE: Elm?

The picture is a little deceptive... taken very late-day with the burning bush between it and the setting sun. It's long since cleared the little shade of the burning bush, so these leaves may be a...

    RE: Elm?

The leaves are about 5 1/2 inches long. They have a coarse feel on top, line very fine grit sandpaper. They are less coarse on the bottom and don't feel really feel fuzzy. They are alternate.

    From...

    Elm?

This tree (looks like some sort of Elm) popped up under a burning bush this spring and has grown quite vigorously.

There are a lot of Siberian Elms nearby, but this doesn't quite look like them....

    RE: Sudden wilting of Sumac

I've pulled PLENTY of Tree-of-Heaven seedlings out over the past few years, and this is definitely Sumac.

After the lower leaves died and dropped, it picked back up and kept on trucking. Maybe...

RE: I need some advice about European Alder

In which state are you located? Invasiveness tends to vary by state. Check your Department of Natural Resources website.

In the meantime, more info than you ever wanted to know...

    RE: Catalpa Tree problems

Is it in a really windy location?

I have one about the same age. The leaves are huge (same size as a full-grown one) and it REALLY gets blown around during storms, but it hasn't lost any branches...

    Sudden wilting of Sumac

I had a wild Staghorn Sumac seedling pop up late last summer at the corner of an old garden that I've been pseudo-naturalizing (my wife refers to it as the "tree orphanage"). As a native pioneer...

    RE: Mega Thorn!

The only tree I've see with forked thorns like that is HoneyLocust, though large thorns like the one in the photo usually appear on the trunk or larger branches.

RE: GA Tree ID Kentucky Coffee?

    Hmmm...

I planted one of these in my front yard a few years ago as a street tree, and it has done very well.

    It came from Arbor Day.

I don't remember running across any reference to their...

    RE: Drought?

I echo Ellyssian's remarks... zero luck here in eastern Ohio with fall plantings. I didn't even try it this year (although the winter was rather mild). I've been stunned that, despite the dry spring,...

RE: Mimosa growing the wrong way

Hmmm... I don't know how that lean could be fixed.

I'd untie it from the dogwood and drive a stake or post and tie it to that, since it would risk stressing or damaging the dogwood when it gets...

    Heh... yep, you're right, Quirky.

I actually stopped and thought about that when I was typing, and still got it wrong!

My mind must have already been drifting toward the long weekend!

    RE: White pine

You could girdle the tree (cut a ring of the bark off all the way around the tree). This would kill it in a season, but then you'd be waiting for the right combination of wind and decay to bring it...

    RE: Horrible time with Oaks...

I've had similar experiences with bare root oaks.

    RE: tree identification help =]

From the bark picture, looks more like cherry to me. I'd almost guess Kwanzan Cherry, but the overall form looks a little too tall and widespreading to be a Kwanzan.

Definitely agree with you, Quirky. I knew Sawtooth oak was not native, but didn't know it was considered invasive anywhere. My comment was more of an observation, not a criticism of the NADF's...

    No clue on this "shrub"

This "shrub" has tough, woody stems, but winter-kills to the ground every year, but comes back with a vengence. I'm not sure if it's planted out of its range or dies back normally. The flowers are...

    RE: Oak Tree Transplant

Can you tell us what kind of oak it is? Oaks in general are very difficult to transplant, but some can handle it better than others.

I've tried to move some of the many Red Oak and Pin Oak...
