I was visiting eastern Kansas a few weeks ago and while driving around I saw trees that were missing their bark on the top, and most outer section of their branches, leaving a pasty while discoloration. It looked like there was only one type of tree this was happening to. Might anyone know what causes this, or what this type of tree might be. Of course I didn't have my camera and all the leaves had fallen, so I couldn't collect a sample.

Do a Google images search on the sycamore, and see if that matches up!
