Would anyone know the name of this tree, it comes from Eastern Kentucky?

I looked in my tree book but couldn't find anything that look like it. I'm told the mature leaves are quite large.

Thanks for any help

Not much to go on there, but it looks like you might have a young bigleaf magnolia, Magnolia macrophylla. It's a Kentucky native. If so, that's a really neat tree.

No at least I didn't mean to, my bad, it's driving me nuts trying to find this.
We had a Big Leaf Magnolia thats why it can't be that, leaves are thicker and darker with flowers on the Magnolia.

I've looked and searched the web but the web searches are too basic.

Are you sure your other magnolia isn't a southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora)? The reason I ask is that bigleaf magnolia leaves aren't very thick or dark, but southern magnolia are. Southern magnolia are also much more commonly planted.

The feature that's making me think bigleaf magnolia is the unusual cordate (lobed) base of the leaves. Of course, your specimen there is just a seedling. The leaves aren't fully developed and it would be much too young to flower.

A fully expanded Magnolia macrophylla leaf:

At the base of the leaf that looks right, any chance it could be a Magnolia tripetala ? It doesn't look like it at the base of that but the lady where the plant came from called it a umbrella tree

In the long run I guess it doesn't matter. We have a yard with different amounts of sun to full shade with a 50' to 60' canopy in our subdivision.

Yeah, the "earlobes" at the leaf base are one of the things that distinquish bigleaf magnolia from umbrella magnolia. I betcha the lady was mixed up.

The possible magnolias with earlobes (called "auriculate" leaves) are bigleaf, pyramid (M. pyramidata), and Fraser magnolia (M. fraseri).
