What time of year should I prune forsythia bushes?

The best time to prune forsythias is after they bloom in the spring. Usually early summer or late fall. Some species can be pruned year round.

Prune forsythia after they flower.

Do *not* do what I used to do - which is take a hedge trimmer and lop off a nice, level hedge-like shape. It took a while (and more work), but I was finally able to convince my mom that they looked better (and were healthier) when you prune them one branch at a time with a bypass lopper. Eventually, I was able to let it go for longer periods without pruning (or at least without a major effort), and the result was much more pleasing.

I believe I pruned just above a bud or branch, and occassionally took one down to the ground to thin things out a bit more. I have a little bit of time before I need to experiment on the forsythia in my yard now, so others may want to provide more than distant memories! =)
