View Full Version : Question on Hazelnut plantings

In the near future, I will be planting Hazelnut trees along my property to create a natural fence. It will be cornered with Wild Plum trees.

My questions are;
1) How far apart should I plant the seedlings for a shrub like result?
2) Has anyone ever tried this in the past, and if so, how is it doing?
3) When planting in shrub like rows, do these trees re-generate new under growth trees to fill in the voids?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am new to the world of using trees and plants without having someone else do it. and I must admit, I am truly enjoying my new hobby.

What direction will this row run? I don't have any Hazelnut expertise but believe trees planted in rows which stretch from north to south don't shade each other as much as east to west rows.

Even if the trees grow up and have thin lower roots you can always wait a couple years and sneak in some Japanese maples type tree-etts which branch low to the ground and enjoy protected sites. The contrast could be quite attractive.
